The Pulmonology Department offers bronchoscopy services, both flexible and rigid. It has earned praise for its work in interventional bronchoscopy, especially Trans-Bronchial Needle Aspiration (TBNA)/ biopsies, endobronchial electrosurgery procedures, balloon bronchoplasty and stenting. Pleuroscopy and video assisted thoracoscopic procedures is another field of expertise of the department.
High quality and high volume patient care is being provided to patients suffering from a variety of respiratory ailments. The particular areas which have benefited since the time include sleep medicine especially sleep related breathing disorders, provision of care to the critically ill (a dedicated and fully functional 9 bedded respiratory intensive care unit) and interventional Pulmonology services. The department has fully functional sleep laboratories, which provides comprehensive polysomnography services daily. The department also has a bronchoscopy lab where flexible bronchoscopy and interventional Pulmonology services are being provided. The department also is actively involved in research in the fields of pulmonary sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, lung cancer, bronchology, sleep medicine and allergic airway disorders. The department also has a functional allergy testing system available for use in particular indications like allergic bronchopulmonary disorders like ABPA.
As regards to the diagnostic flexible bronchoscopy, procedures like transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA), Bronchoscopic Lung Biopsy, Endobronchial Biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) are being routinely performed. More than 1400 flexible bronchoscopies are performed in the department every year. Further modalities in development include therapeutic rigid bronchoscopic airway procedures, magnetic phrenic nerve stimulation studies, cardio pulmonary exercise testing, pulmonary rehabilitation program and facilities for providing ECLS (Extracorporeal life support).
